Dr. Tedros Adahanom met (June 18) with athletes from the National Athletics Team of Tanzania here in Addis Ababa (June 18, 2014). In his meeting with the ten men strong team, Dr. Tedros noted that the Government of Ethiopia is delighted in hosting and providing training to athletes of Tanzania.
He also thanked to the representatives, coaches and professionals of the Ethiopian Sport Commission and Ethiopian Athletics Federation for providing the training to the Tanzanian athletes. He added that Ethiopia is ready to share its experiences, deepen the people-to-people relations, enhance exchange of professionals and support Tanzania in sport in general and athletics in particular.
He also added that Ethiopia is committed to advance athletics as an instrument that advances cooperation bilateral and regional partnership. He also underlined that sport diplomacy is an important tool that would elevate the strong ties of the two countries into new heights.
He added that Ethiopia views Tanzania and other African countries as collaborators than competitors, noting that Ethiopia would provide continuing training to athletes and professionals of Tanzania and facilitate the close cooperation and consultation between the two countries’ athletics federations.
Tanzanian athletes expressed their gratitude to the Government of Ethiopia for the warm reception and hospitality accorded to them. They also appreciated the Government of Ethiopia for providing an intensive training in an environment where basic facilities and equipments are in full provision.
They expressed their hope that the training being given by Ethiopian coaches would enable them to show excellent performance in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The National Athletics Team of Tanzania is being provided an intensive training by Ethiopian coaches and professionals in short, middle and long distances to make the team formidable competitor in the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
