UNHCR Chief Due in Ethiopia for Somali Refugee Meet

87035f0cU.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres is due to arrive in Addis Ababa next week to attend a ministerial meeting of countries that host Somali refugees, an official with the commission said Thursday.

The meeting, which would be held on Wednesday, would focus on means of helping the nations of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Uganda, and Yemen deal with the rising number of Somali refugees fleeing insecurity and food shortages to their territories, UNHCR Ethiopia spokesperson Kisut Gebregziabher told Anadolu Agency.

Guterres will join the African ministers in a press conference at the end of the meeting, Gebregziabher said.

Representatives of donors, inter-governmental organizations, NGOs, the diaspora and the private sector will also attend the meeting.

Somalia has remained in the grip of political violence since the outbreak of civil war in 1991.

The troubled country recently appeared to inch closer to stability with the intervention of African Union troops tasked with bringing Al-Shabaab militant group to heel

According to the UNCHR figures, more than 1.1 million Somalis are displaced internally while nearly one million refugees are living in neighboring countries.
