UNESCO has reportedly accepted the establishment of African Eco-hydrology Center in Ethiopia.

39037400The proposal of Ethiopia for the establishment of African Eco-hydrology center was accepted at the 21st International Water Safety and Conservation Program held in Paris from June 19-21, 2014, according to the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy.

The reason for the selection of Ethiopia was the capacity building and other water related problem solving works it carried out since 2008 in cooperation with Poland, which is the center of European Eco-hydrology.

Ministry Communication Director, Bezuneh Tolcha, said that Ethiopia was chosen from among contending member African countries.

All committee members were positive to the selection, the director said, adding that the delegations of Poland, Turkey, Indonesia, Sudan and Namibia in particular strongly supported Ethiopia’s candidature.

The establishment of the center in Ethiopia would enable the country to prevent pollution and parchedness of rivers and lakes as well as streams; and recognition for its diversity in aquatic life, it was indicated.
