Three railway projects haven’t yet started due to lack of finance: Ministry of Transport

29caecfaMinister of transport, Workineh Gebeyehu told parliament on Tuesday that three railway projects which were scheduled to be started in the GTP period and planned to be begin in the current fiscal year are not yet started due to lack of finance.

These three railway projects are the Awash-Woldia (Hara gebeya), Woldia (Hara gebeya)-Mekelle and Woldia (Hara gebeya)-Semera-Tajura railway lines. In his ten months project assessment report to the parliament, the minister labeled the project status of the railway projects as medium.

The minister has told the parliament that works have been underway at the ministry and the government level to acquire finance for the projects and recently Turkish and Swiss banks are expected to finance the projects. The report has also indicated that the Addis Ababa-Measo-Dewelle and the Addis Ababa city light train projects as being completed 40% and 71% respectively.

Concerning the road construction too, the report indicates that the amount of work done in the nine months time of the 2006 E.C is only 30 % of the planned work.
