The first phase of the Renaissance Dam’s construction is completed

4e4b020aIt is announced that the first phase of the renaissance dam’s construction is completed. The dam which is located 750 kms from Addis Ababa at a place called Guba in the Benishangul Gumuz region will begin generating 216MW of electric power next year.

The 6,000MW electric power generating plant is the biggest in Africa and the 7th largest in the world. When the dam’s construction is finalized in the next two years time, an artificial lake that stretches for 246 kms will be created where there will be two islands in it.

The dam will occupy around 17 million cubic meters of water. To take the power generated from the power plant a 240 kms long electric power grid is being built.

The project has around 8,500 professionals working on it; among which 590 are of foreign nationals as CEO of the project Engineer Simegnew Bekele told the Reporter newspaper.

In the coming years the number of the project workers is expected to rise to 14 000.
