It has been ten years now since the government has embarked on a plan to build condominiums in Addis Ababa and other cities to give affordable homes to middle and lower income citizens. But the situations now seen especially on some condominiums in Addis are somewhat different. For instance, if we take the case of Gotera Condominium; among the 2,500 condos in the 78 buildings 92% of those living there have rented the homes.

Where are those middle and lower income citizens for whom the condos have been built? Most of them have rented their homes from 3,000 Br to 6,500 Br for the studio and three bed room condos respectively and have rented a cheaper one in another place. And those who have rented the condos that expensive are not by no means lower and middle income citizens.

The situation shows a deep rooted error on the side of the policy makers and those in charge of these condo building endeavors. In this condominium complex there are about 30 bars and pubs where some of them work 24 hours. This has created a tremendous amount noise pollution and violence in the neighborhood.
