deposit check
Recently, a lie was spread on ecadforum accusing the daughter of the late PM Meles Zenawi depositing $5 billion in one of the banks of NY. Bank name is not mentioned in this falsified article, but the blurry image of the ” Deposit Check” is posted as seen above in the first picture. Let’s examine this “Deposit Check” if it fits the formal check or deposit slip design used by banks in the US. To begin with, there is no such thing called “Deposit Check” in the market. Commonly there is a check payable to someone,  or a Deposit Slip to deposit money into an existing bank account. Anyways, let’s not waste time discussing terminology and go to the main issue, the legitimacy of the document. Picture number 3 above shows a sample check used by any bank in the US. It has the customer’s name on the top left corner (or sometimes on the top center), a check number on the top right corner, a date just below the check number, “pay to the order of” at the center of the check in the body section, next to it on the right section will be the amount paid in numbers, name of bank right below the “pay to the order of” (in most cases), a memo, customer’s signature, routing number and bank account number in the bottom section. In addition to that, no bank in the US just puts “Name” in the place of “Account holders name” or “Pay to the order of” for clarity and to avoid confusion. Now you can clearly see the alleged “Deposit check” is not a check because it doesn’t have any of the formality discussed above. In fact, it can be concluded that it’s designed by a person living outside the US who doesn’t have a clue about check templates in the US.

Then, if picture number one isn’t a check, could it be a deposit slip? Let’s examine that, shall we?

As seen in picture number two, deposit slips are highly articulate as to the amount, the name of the person depositing and the account number. Interestingly, the alleged picture number one doesn’t even have a space to provide the account number to be considered as a deposit slip. It can not also be considered as a check because of the above reasons.

What can we, Ethiopians, should understand from this false accusations that mislead people who follow the hate politics blind folded? There are some people who underestimate and insult your intelligence. Examine the documents before you rush to judging.

I rest my case!
