Scholar says Ethiopia Meaningfully Reduced Dependency

f9caffb7Ethiopia has meaningfully reduced the spirit of dependency due to the favorable and realizable policies it has been introducing, according to the Dean of Development Studies of Addis Ababa University.

College Dean Dr. Degefu Tolosa said the country is able to cut the number of aid recipients as it worked by focusing on irrigation, soil and water conservation, infrastructure, and developing saving culture.

He further cited the continuous growth in income and the progress registered in health as well as education and others spheres as factors that contributed to the decline in the number of aid recipients.

Farmers were able to extricate themselves from utter poverty by supplying the products they harvested utilizing irrigation and rain water to the market through the infrastructure built and for their own consumption.

The feasibility of the policies the country has designed to protect citizens from disasters is also being proved, according to Dr. Degefu.
Studies indicate that the number of persons exposed to disaster before 20 years was 14.2 million while the figure is now 2.7 million, he underscored.
According to him, the government and stakeholders have still a lot of work to do to sustain these good practices and get the confidence of farmers so that they could believe in them and do away with dependency.

Acting Public Relations Head of Ethiopian Strategic Food Reserve Agency, Gizaw Abute, said the multidimensional development activities undertaken by the government have reduced the number of aid recipients.

Currently, the country has 460,000 metric tons of cereal reserves and it is working to acquire about three million metric tons reserve within the coming three years, he added. Some 13 billion birr is allocated by the government to secure reliable food reserve, it was indicated.
