Five of 15 executive members of the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party resigned from the members of the executive committee established by the president of the party Gizachew Shiferaw (Eng.).
Five of the members of the executive committee who resigned are Tekle Bekele, First Deputy President, Belay Fikadu, Deputy President, Solomon Seyoum, Head of Political Affairs, Daniel Tefera, Head of Party Affairs and Dawit Asrade, Head of Economic Affairs.
“We will continue to work with the party as members of the national committee; however, due to the differences that we have with the president we decided to resign from the executive committee lead by the president,” Daniel told The Reporter.
“We have differences in leadership and don’t believe that his leadership will lead the struggle forward, therefore we decided to resign,” he added.
Though he stated the difference is based on leadership, he refrains to comment on the details of the matter and says, “The details will be discussed in the party.”
On the other hand, president of the party Gizachew told The Reporter, “UDJ as a party is working based on institutional standards, therefore the resignation of individuals from the executive committee did not harm the day-to-day activities of the party, the council and the executive committees are the bosses of the party and every member of the party.”
He further added that differences are the manifestation of democracy and those individuals who resigned from the party should present their problem to the executive committee and discuss the issue.
The Reporter asked whether there were discussions to sort out this difference or not, and the president of the party replied by saying: “There was no discussion related to this issue they simply resigned without any discussions.”
However, Daniel told The Reporter, “There were discussions about this and other issues, however, the president is not committed to draw any decision, and that’s why we decided to resign.”
“There might be a way that he is looking to achieve and we might not understand it therefore we decided to give him a chance,” he further added.
In relation to the recent merger issue with the All Ethiopia Unity Party (AEUP), both the president and Daniel told The Reporter that it would not hamper the process and as soon as the issue of AEUP and the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) is solved, the two parties will resume the merger and will realize the plan of the merger.
