Ethnic Conflict at the Meti town of the Gambella Region

97e5552fAccording to a source from the area, people have died in an ethnic conflict that has started a week ago in and around Meti town of the Gambella region. The cause of the conflict being the native Mezengers demand for other ethnic groups to leave the area.

The Mezengers have also demanded to own farm lands and cash crop businesses which are naturally owned mostly by individuals from other ethnic groups. More than 2 000 people have fled their homes from Meti town and the neighboring rural villages to nearby Tepi town where they are languishing without food or shelter.

Residents of Tepi town are helping the displaced citizens. The federal police force has arrived at the conflict area today.
