Getaneh Kebede was the hero as his late equaliser ensured a point for Bidvest Wits against AmaZulu in their Absa Premiership match on Tuesday night.

Nkosinathi Mthiyane had opened the scoring for Usuthu midway through the second half at the Bidvest Stadium, but a mistake by Tapuwa Kapini handed Kedebe the chance to net an equaliser.

Wits had their first real opportunity of the match in the 17th minute. Bongolwethu Jayiya delivered a good ball into the box from a set piece on the right flank but Musa Bilankulu headed over the bar from close range.

Four minutes later the visitors replied with their own threat when their big striker Sthembiso Ngcobo fended off his markers and slipped the ball past Wits keeper Moeneeb Josephs but it went narrowly wide of goal.

Usuthu could have fallen behind when Wits forward Robin Ngalande’s shot was deflected wide of goal after an AmaZulu defender had got his body in the way. It looked goal bound as it trickled wide and shaved the bar.

Ten minutes before the interval, Benjani was one on one with the keeper but with only a tap-in required he missed the ball with AmaZulu keeper Tapuwa Kapini at his mercy. Both teams went into the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.

Five minute into the second half, Usuthu were dealt a huge blow when their left-back and main set-piece taker Marc Van Heerden limped off the pitch and had to be replaced.

In the 65th minute Usuthu took the lead. Ayanda Dlamini sent in a wonderful ball into Mthiyane, who was arguably the shortest man on the field, and he headed in from close range to make it 1-0 to the men in green.

Wits tried to get back in the match and were denied a goal when Ethiopian striker Getaneh Kebede was adjudged to have been offside.

With five minutes to go Mthiyane could have grabbed his braced when he was set up by a defence splitting ball but as he rushed into the box, his first-time shot went wide of goal.

With the match seemingly heading for an AmaZulu win, things changed in dramatic fashion when AmaZulu keeper Tapuwa Kapini tried to play for time, but his time wasting antics resulted in him losing the ball and Kedebe took advantage and tapped home with ease.
