Sports minister Chishimba Kambwili yesterday accosted Ethiopian match officials that officiated the Nkana versus Etoile du Sahel CAF Confederation Cup match calling them “stupid” and lecturing them how to handle matches.
National Sports Council of Zambia figure Mwamba Kalenga was hovering around the minister who was being pulled away by security personnel. Kambwili’s action has implications and could draw the wrath of CAF.
Ethiopian referee Tessema Weseya awarded the visitors a late controversial penalty reducing the tally to 4-3 after Nkana looked set to win with a positive two margin.
Weyesa handed Etoile an early and late penalty at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe as the Zambian side sailed to their first Group B win in the CAF Confederation Cup.
At the final whistle, Kamwbili left his seat and headed for Weyesa who was being shielded from the Zambian minister by a heavy presence of Zambian state police but failed to escape Nkana fans who showered him with beer and missiles as he headed into the tunnel.
“You are very stupid, you don’t handle games like that,” Kambwili said pointing a finger at Weyesa who he also followed to the dressing room.
Clad in his newly adopted Nigerian outfit, the bulky minister was ushered out of the stadium but his action had already agitated Nkana fans who were jubilant to see a minister lead their hooliganism.
The confusion later gained momentum when fans started accusing the referee for allegedly failing to officiate the game in a more befitting manner.
The Nkana fans shouted all sorts of insults at the Ethiopian referee who remained protected by more than 20 state police officers on the pitch.
