The Ethiopian New Year will be celebrated in Footscray with a festival this weekend
HE streets of Footscray will come alive this Saturday with Ethiopian New Year celebrations.
The festival, which will welcome in year 2006 in the Ethiopian calendar, is one of Australia’s biggest African events.
The street party will feature traditional dance and music, an Ethiopian coffee ceremony, cultural fashion show and story telling from elders in the Nicholson St Mall.
Ethiopia still follows the Orthodox Julian calendar which consists of 12 months of 30 days and a 13th month, Pagume, of five or six days, depending on whether it’s a leap year.
The celebrations will be held from 11am to 4pm.
