Ethiopia Plans to Get Over U.S. $1 Billion From Coffee

untitledThe Ministry of Industry has said Ethiopia is working to earn over $1 billion from coffee export in the current Ethiopian budget year, 2006. The income is expected from exporting 277, thousand tons of coffee to the international market.

Trade Minister announced the plan on Sunday in a discussion forum held with the leadership of coffee exporting zones and special woredas of the South Ethiopia Peoples’ State held in Hawasa town. Kebede said his ministry has planned to earn $5.6 billion from export of various crops in the stated period out of which coffee takes the lion’s share.

The nation had earned $740 million from coffee export in the previous year. The drop in coffee price affected the earning, he said.

Chief of the South Ethiopia Peoples’ State, Dessie Dalke for his part urged the leadership at various levels to give due attention to the enhancement of quantity and quality of coffee export for a better earning of foreign currency.
