Egypt need to be Serious on Dam Talks

Layout 1The talks that has been going on between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan on the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is at the standstill since they met last time on Khartoum on January 2014. Considering the main reason behind the standstill being Egypt’s leaving the negotiation table by demanding the immediate halt of the dam’s construction, Ethiopian government has been issuing its readiness to continue the discussion which the Egyptian government refused.

Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan had established an International Panel of Experts to review and assess the dam’s construction and its possible effect on lower basin countries where the panel consists of 10 members six of whom the three countries and four international experts.

Though the full report of the panel of experts hasn’t been made public till now it is announced that the report has claimed as “the design of the dam is based on international standards and principles and offers high benefit for all the three countries and would not cause significant harm on both the lower riparian countries” Ethiopian and Sudan has accepted the report but Egypt demanded for the formation of another panel of experts on the issue and the immediate halt of the dam’s construction till then which Ethiopia couldn’t accept.

In the ensuing situation Egypt has withdrawn herself from the negotiation table where Ethiopia is still urging Egypt to be serious on dam talks commence the talk.
