The anticipated merger between the All Ethiopia Unity Party (AEUP) and Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) was postponed for the second time after the parties signed a pre-merger agreement on June 8 at AEUP’s headquarters located around Tewodros Square.
The president of UDJ Gizachew Shiferaw (Eng.) told The Reporter that the planned merger is postponed because of some unfinished business regarding issues of mobilization of finances.
According to him, though there are some tasks that they need to attend to before the last date of the merger, they are almost finalizing most of them now, and that the merger will happen on August 9 and 10 as planned.
This is the third date which is set for the this merger. It is to be remembered that the parties planned to go head with the merger two weeks ago, on July 12 and 13, but the program was canceled due to some unfinished tasks the parties had to complete before merging. Later on, another date, which is today and tomorrow, was adopted by the two parties only to end up canceling it for the second time in a row. Once again, the date for this anticipated merger has been moved to two weeks from now, August 9 and 10.
According to the president, the preparations of the document that contains the rules and regulations of the newly-merged party has been finalized and is awaiting the general assembly’s approval. Both parties have got the blessing of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia for merger.
In relation to the issue of finance, the two parties have prepared the budget and started to mobilize funds from supporters both locally and across the globe, Gizachew added.
This is the major reason behind postponing the planned merger, the president concluded.
