On an event held to commemorate the country’s Independence Day, Eritrean president Isayas Afeworki said that he is ready to draft a new constitution and incorporate some changes in the country’s political climate. The president said this to thousands of Eritreans gathered at the Asmara stadium. The president mentioned the various pressures imposed on his rule as the main cause for incorporating the changes.
The president accuses the Ethiopian and the U.S governments for impeding his development efforts. He also mentioned the sanctions imposed by the US Security Council for helping terrorist groups in Somalia as having a detrimental impact on his country.
Eritrean government’s oppositions respond to the president’s remark as a bogus propaganda intended to halt the progress of the struggle by the Eritrean people under the opposition forces. Though Eritrea had a constitution drafted in 1997 it didn’t yet endorsed. Eritrea doesn’t have a constitution. Under the one party rule political parties, political opposition and a media are prohibited in the country.
