Track laying in Addis Ababa Light Railway Project Started
The Ethiopian government is building what is to be the country’s first light city railway at a cost of some 4.8 million US dollars. The project is now 43 per cent complete and is expected to be concluded by the year 2015.
Rails laying started in Addis’ city railway line A half kilometers long rail laying is started on the Addis’ city railway line that stretched from an area named ‘Hayat’ to ‘Torhayiloch’. The city’s mayor, Diriba Kuma, said on the event that the event resembles the historic episode that occurred 100 years ago in the then Ethio-French rail way project.
Ministry of Transport, Workeneh Gebeyehu, in his part, admires the city’s residents’ cooperation for the project and informed that 48% of the project is completed.
Nine color samples for the railway carriages were also shown and the mayor, the transport minister and those presented on the event chose their preferences.
The railway project director, Engineer Behailu Sintayehu, remarked that the color samples will also be placed at five different centers across the city.
Legehare railway station’s Institute of Train compound, Former fourth Battalion (Arategna Kifletore) compound, inside the railway station office in the hayat neighborhood and Ethiopian Railway main office compound are the main centers for the public to submit the color preferences.
A color that got the most selection will be the color for the carriages when the train transport began its service.
