The 83 Years Old Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison for Usury

The 83 years old lawyer is sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 7 000 Br by a court in Addis for usury.

As the charge document filed by the prosecutor of the customs and revenues authority points out Ato Bekele Gebremariam who has served as a lawyer for various years has been engaged in a usury practice starting form 1989 E.C. The charge document depicts that Ato Bekele Gebremariam at different times has given a loan that ranges from 50 000Br to 200 000Br for two couples and another individual with a 10% interest.

Ato Bekele is also accused of collecting money beyond his means for the 4 million birr in his bank account that hasn’t been taxed. The court declares Ato Bekele guilty of the five charges including those mentioned above.

Though Ato Bekele pleaded that he does what he does unknowingly, the federal courts 8th criminal bench sentenced him to 8 years in prison and fined 7 000 Br.
