Rails that have been laid on the Ayat-Megenagna Section of the Addis Ababa Light Train project are being replaced. The reason for the replacement is reported to be the out of the standard work done by the contractor. The replacement which has been going on for more than a week now has reached to the CMC location from Ayat.
The standard procedure as clearly depicted in the contract was to continuously weld the rails together using oxygen weld. Sources said that though the contactor has a full knowledge of the standard procedure on the contract and been told repeatedly by the Swedish firm which is doing the consultancy work on the project, it goes on to lay rails and connect using bolts. But when the contractor learnt that the consultant wouldn’t approve the work for the payment, the contractor began removing the rails.
It is known that in the Ayat-Megenagna section alone there are about 960 rails each with a length of 25 meters. Both the contractor the Chinese Railway Engineering Corporation and the Swedish consultant firm declined to give their comments on the issue claiming that the contract agreement wouldn’t allow them to comment on the project before its completion.
