Both the roads have been constructed by Sunshine Construction, with one in particular having been hindered by challenging conditions
Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn is scheduled to inaugurate two roads in two consequetive days over the weekend, both constructed by Sunshine Construction Plc, sources disclosed to Fortune.
Hailemariam will cut the ribbon on Saturday, opening up the 82Km road from Butagira to Gore to traffic. Under construction for the past four years, the road consumed a total of 801 million Br, claiming 9.76 million Br a kilometre. The road, supervised by Highway Engineers & Consultants and Hamda & Panas Consultants, is known to have been the most challenging due to frequent landslides and heavy rain in the area of Zebidar, where there is an 11Km passage over such terrain, according to those familiar with the project.
Hailemariam will travel the following day to the Alaba area, in the Southern Regional State, where he is scheduled to inaugurate the 67Km stretching from Alaba to Welbereka. It took Sunshine Construction Plc four years to complete and cost the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) 714 million Br, consuming 10.6 million Br a kilometre. United Consulting Engineers supervised the progress of construction.
Both roads have consumed close to four times less a kilometre than the most expensive road under construction in Ethiopia. The ERA has contracted SUR Construction S.C, a subsidiary company of EFFORT, to the 53Km road from Tekeze River to Abadi, in Tigray Regional State. This road is projected to cost 2.1 billion Br. The road passes through the legendary chain of mountains and rough terrain of the north.
