Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn arrived for an official visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Sunday (January 19). He will attend the World Future Energy Summit being held in Abu Dhabi. The Ethiopian delegation received a warm welcome from Abu Dhabi and UAE officials on arrival, and the Prime Minister held with Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, on ways to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Prime Minister Hailemariam emphasized the value Ethiopia gives to its deep rooted relations with the UAE, noting that relations between Ethiopia and the UAE have been growing steadily, particularly over the last decade. The Prime Minister said the opening of the Ethiopian Embassy in Abu Dhabi was a testimony to the cordial relations between the two countries. The Prime Minister praised the cultural, economic and social developments of the UAE and expressed Ethiopia’s willingness to attract UAE investments especially in the private sector.
He noted the existence of a number of UAE companies and individuals which are investing in Ethiopia and expressed Ethiopia’s keen interest to further strengthen its relations with the UAE in areas of investment, trade and tourism with the aim of taking their cooperation to a higher level. The Prime Minister of UAE emphasized his country’s commitment to strengthen relations with Ethiopia in various fields, noting that the UAE wanted to reach agreements with Ethiopia in aviation cooperation, investment protection and avoidance of double taxation.
Prime Minister Hailemariam said Ethiopia was ready to reach agreements in these areas and these would be signed during a joint ministerial meeting of the two counties that is expected to be held in the near future. Prime Minister Hailemariam also briefed the UAE Prime Minister on Ethiopia’s Green Growth Strategy, a strategy that benefits not only Ethiopia but also the entire region.
The meeting was also attended by Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Development and International Cooperation, Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy and a number of other ministers and senior officials. During the visit, Prime Minister Hailemariam and his delegation have also been meeting with other senior UAE officials and holding consultations on ways to further strengthen relations.
