‘No political parties in Eritrea,’ says President Isaias

Addis Ababa, 13 February 2014 (WIC) – Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki reiterated his decision not to let contesting political parties operate in Eritrea.

No other political parties will be allowed to function in Eritrea except the current ruling party, he said in an interview with ERi-TV recently.

The People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) is the only party in Eritrea and no national elections have been held since the country gained its independency in 1993.

“We do not want to see any parties exist here other than PFDJ. There did not exist, and never again could exist. It is unthinkable,” he said.

“If there are parties who wish to operate in this country, there is no place for them. They can go elsewhere either in the moon or other planet,” he added.

President Isaias also downplayed the peace proposal presented by Cohen and three American diplomats.

“I consider it as a childish peace approach. It is meaningless and a waste of time. We do not give it weight as it is a speculation spread by America and Ethiopia,” he said.

President Isaias also denied any involvement in Somalia but revealed how far his country is getting weakened as a result of the sanction by UNSC for his belligerence and destabilization role in that country.

The president also denied everything happening in Eritrea and the suffering of his people. Eritrea is repeatedly considered by scholars as a failing state in the Horn of Africa
