bfe68b06Yesterday, on February 13, 2014 a meeting was held between Ethiopian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) and stakeholders on the issue of beginning mobile banking in Ethiopia.

Though there are about 23 million mobile subscribers in the country the use of the device for banking purpose is almost null. Except for some banks that use mobile phone banking technology to notify users of their account status and enable to send money to another account, the overall use of mobile phone banking technology to the rural community is not yet started in the country.

Currently EthioTelecom is expressing its readiness to begin the service where the pilot project held at the Amhara Credit and Savings Institution was successful. EthioTelecom is saying that when the network expansion work that could handle the network demand of 69 million subscribers is finalized after six months, the mobile banking service will be started.

The service will help subscribers to transfer money, save and make purchases when and where they want it.
