“He wanted to shoot someone” tipsters said about the teen suspected in the death of Ethiopian Yosef Tulu in Dallas

Friends told police the teenager suspected of killing a 7-Eleven clerk talked about wanting to shoot someone with his dad’s rifle, according to court documents.

Colten Jon Moore, 18, was arrested Wednesday night and charged with capital murder in the death of Yosef Tulu.

Tulu, 30, worked at the Garland 7-Eleven store off Firewheel Parkway to save money to go home to Ethiopia and get married.

Surveillance video from Tuesday’s early morning attack shows a masked gunman walk in with a rifle and scope. Police said Tulu complied with all the robber’s demands, but he was still shot.

Tips from two TV viewers led police to Moore. They told police he lives near the store, has worn a mask like the one in the video and has bragged about taking his father’s .22 caliber rifle with a scope, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

The tipsters said for the past year and a half Moore has talked about wanting to shoot a cop or shoot someone and make it look like a robbery, the affidavit says.

One tipster told police he asked Moore if he had done this. Moore said he had, but did not want to talk about it, the affidavit says.

Police executed a search warrant at a home in the 2900 block of Creek Valley Drive where Moore lives with his parents. It’s less than a mile from the 7-Eleven.

Officers beat down the front door and recovered a small-caliber rifle they believe was used in Tulu’s death.

Moore was taken into custody without incident and has been cooperative, police said. His bond was set at $1 million.

Moore graduated from Naaman Forest High School last year. He was arrested in December for public intoxication.

7-Eleven announced it is helping Tulu’s family pay to have the body returned to Ethiopia and is offering counseling services to any store employees affected by the shooting.

Police do not believe Tulu was specifically targeted.

GARLAND, Texas -
