French embassy in Addis told Reporter newspaper that French language education is to be given at some government high schools in Ethiopia. French language education used to be given at the Emperor Hilesellasie’s reign before the Ethiopia revolution in 1974, but following the regime change the French language education was taken out of the country’s curriculums.
Now, starting from the next Ethiopian academic year, the French language education will be given in some of the country’s government high schools. The embassy said that the pilot French education project that was given at the Minilik II High School to twenty students in this academic year was successful. Therefore, in the next year the French language education is planned to be given at two high schools of Addis, in the high schools of Dire Dawa, Harar and Debre Birhane.
The curriculum preparation for the French language education is done by the collaborative effort of the French embassy in Addis and the Ministry of Education. The request for the French language education to be given at the country’s high schools is said to have come from the Ethiopian government.
