Ethiopian maid denies theft, tells Dubai court “She didn’t pay me my salary.. It’s my money.”

dirham21A housemaid who is on trial for stealing thousands of dirhams and dollars from her boss claims she only did it because she had not been paid her wages.

Dubai Court of First Instance heard how the 22-year-old Ethiopian housemaid was allegedly being treated badly by her boss, so she planned to steal the cash and escape.

The maid told the court yesterday:

“She didn’t pay me my salary for three months. I took the money because I needed it. It’s my money.” Dubai Public Prosecution charged her with stealing $25,000, Dhs2,200 and 200 euros in cash, plus gold jewellery worth Dhs8,000.

Official records state that her 41-year-old boss, from Tajikistan called police after discovering her money and jewels were missing from her Muraqabbat flat.

“I went to the housemaid’s bedroom and I noticed something strange on her bed. I checked and found she had put pillows under the duvet to make it look like someone was sleeping. I then discovered the money and jewellery was missing,” the boss said in official records.

She said her other maid was also missing and they had both taken their passports. “I called police to report that the two maids had escaped,” she added.

Police traced the maid and arrested the pair. The case was adjourned and the duo will remain in custody.
