Ethiopian hopes to establish two more hubs in Central Africa

Ethiopian Airlines is currently in negotiations to set up two new hubs, Capital learned. The airline is negotiating with Juba Airport to set up its hub in the capital as well as carrying out other negotiations with DR Congo and Central African Republic for the second one. Deals are yet to be singed.

The move is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ bid to set up multiple hubs in Africa, in line with Vision 2025, its 15 year strategic roadmap.

Ethiopian currently has three hubs: Lome, Togo which it opened in partnership with ASKY Airlines serving the West African region, Lilongwe, Malawi in partnership with Malawian Airline serving the west and central Africa region and Addis Ababa.

In a related development Ethiopian was placed first in Africa in terms of operating profits which are USD 228 million on IATA’s top 50 airlines of 2013 report. The airline was placed as the largest carrier in Africa and 37th in the world with revenue of USD 2.3 billion. Ethiopian was also placed 18th in the world in terms of its operating profit.

In 2010 Ethiopian adopted “Vision 2025”, a 15-year development strategy, under which the airline anticipates increasing its fleet to 120, the number of destinations to 90, carrying more than 18 million passengers and 720,000 tones of cargo.

″Vision 2025″ also considers a fourfold expansion of the capacity building for trainees in the airline’s aviation academy.

Ethiopian Airlines currently has a code sharing agreement with 16 airlines including Air China, Lufthansa Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines.
