Ethiopia supplied 22,000kg of new precious stones to the global market in March.
Traditional Mineral Trade Coordination Director Tamirat Mojo stated that it is the first time for the country to supply this amount and obtain income of $100,000 .
He said the precious stones are Aquamarine, Sapphire, Amazonite and Quartz.
Not having the amount and types of all precious stones in the country identified yet has been the major limitation, according to him.
Geology Instructor at Addis Ababa University Professor Solomon Tadesse adds that traditional way of extracting the minerals, with no modern technologies, has adverse effect on quality also.
Therefore, Solomon said they have designed curriculum to include precious stones in, and they have a plan to open 2nd degree program as well.
He said the department supports the sector and help the country utilize its resource efficiently and benefit well from the sector.
