Ethiopian Space Science Society Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS) announced that though studies are showing the convenient position of Ethiopia for space exploration, the country hasn’t yet exploited its potential.
Currently ten countries are able to launch their own satellites into orbit while fifty countries have sent their satellites using these ten countries. In Africa it is only three countries; South Africa, Algeria and Nigeria who have their own satellites.
The rest have to use other countries satellites’ for services where they have to pay millions of dollars. ESSS’s overseer Ato Tefera Walewa said that the Ethiopia’s convenient position for space exploration is not something that every country can have but Ethiopia couldn’t use its opportunity.
He also emphasized that space exploration should not be considered as a luxurious endeavor while it can help for identifying natural disaster zones, for mining and agriculture. To this end, he mentioned the examples of poor countries like Nigeria and India who are getting the benefits of having their own satellites.
It is also stressed that if government’s policy makers have given enough concern on the issue, Ethiopia can have its own Satellite where besides using it for various purposes it can also generate income by giving the service to neighboring countries.
