Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros Adhanom met and held discussions with Ms. Cecile Hillyer of New Zealand’s Aid Program on Tuesday (October 8). Ms. Hillyer, who is the Program’s Director for the Global Bilateral Division, acknowledged that the relationship between Ethiopia and New Zealand is growing, as evidenced by the opening of New Zealand’s new embassy in Addis Ababa.
She said Aid Program’s focus was on nutrition and health and it was setting up an initiative to assist in creating capacity to process nutrients here in Ethiopia. She added that the Program’s initiative in nutrition development was an opportunity to bring in a number of partners and stakeholders that would help to create familiarity with the investment potential in Ethiopia in the area of agriculture.
Ms. Hillyer explained that New Zealand had good experience in establishing and developing value chains in agriculture, and for increasing quality, quantity and ensuring consistency in production. Dr. Tedros noted that the initiative on nutrition development was very important and a priority area for Ethiopia. He stressed New Zealand companies were welcome to invest in Ethiopia and urged the Aid Program to encourage New Zealand’s agri-businesses to come to Ethiopia.
He noted that from the export perspective Ethiopia had a large potential for foreign investors who wished to engage in creating value added products as opposed to exporting primary produce. The New Zealand Aid Program is the government’s international aid and development program under its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It has a mission to support sustainable development in developing countries.
