Ethiopia has arrived at historic juncture where it predominantly relies on the Republic of Djibouti for its external trade; the Djibouti port and the railway line being the main outlets. The territory’s importance has remained unparalleled irrespective of whether or not Massawa and Assab were under the domain of the Ethiopian state.
This book attempts to assess Ethiopia’s efforts to sustain its entitlements over Djibouti since the commencement of French colonial administration on the territory at the end of the 19th century. Positions successive Ethiopian regimes assumed on the territory, efforts exerted to maintain its preferential rights over the port and the railway, clandestine interventions in the affairs of the territory so as to guarantee these privileges, schemes to deflect untoward influences emanating from third parties (particularly France and Somalia) etc are among the central points of discussion.
The book aims at outlining the objective reasons that have progressively diminished Ethiopia’s prerogatives over the territory, leading to its current dependence on the will of Djibouti officials. More significantly, it endeavors to generate a lively discussion on possible trends dictating relations between the two nations.
