Thirty Friends of Ethiopia from the business and media community, both Germans and Ethiopians living in Frankfurt and its surroundings, met on February 28 at the Consulate General Office of Ethiopia in Frankfurt, and decided to form a German-Ethiopia Business Network.
The aim of the new organization is to promote business between German and Ethiopia. Their decision followed a lively discussion on the benefits and problems of doing business in Ethiopia, including the fact that Ethiopia has all the necessary prerequisites to promote business, such as peace and stability, low level of corruption, a developing infrastructure and an overall stable macro-economic situation and was working to resolve shortages of skilled man power and bureaucratic hurdles.
The relatively low level of German business in Ethiopia was attributed to a hesitation of German businesses to go to Africa as well as some bureaucratic bottlenecks. Among those attending the meeting were some which already invest in Ethiopia and wish to increase their investment, including Rift Valley Garden, Deutsche Balaton, Dessro International and Kaffe Pura, as well as companies which have recently acquired investment permits and others exploring the opportunities in Ethiopia, including “Travel and Personality”‘, a tour operator in Frankfurt, and Moment Mal TV, a Film Production Plc.
A number of Diaspora Ethiopians involved in business in Frankfurt and interested in business activities in Ethiopia and in providing a bridge for German businesses to Ethiopia also attended the event. Participants selected four to coordinate the Business Network in cooperation with the Office of the Consulate General.
