Japan's Prime Minster Shinzo Abe talks as he visits the Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa port outside Yangon
(Reuters) – Japan pledged African leaders a $32 billion in public and private support on Saturday to help growth on the continent and encourage Japanese firms to invest there over the next five years.

The package, unveiled by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the opening of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), includes $14 billion official development aid and $6.5 billion support to help infrastructure.

Resource-poor Japan has long been keen on Africa’s vast natural resources, even more so since dependence on oil and gas imports surged after the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster shut almost all of Japan’s nuclear reactors.

Japan’s direct investment in Africa was $460 million in 2011, compared with China’s $3.17 billion, according to the Japan External Trade Organization and China’s government data.

Some 50 African leaders gathered for the three-day conference held in Yokohama near Tokyo to discuss issues such as economic development, peace-making and anti-piracy.

“What Africa needs now is private-sector investment. ‘PPP,’ or ‘public-private partnership,’ leverages that investment,” Abe said in an opening speech.

Abe, who has been engaged in aggressive diplomacy since he took office in December, also said he planned to visit Africa as soon as possible.

State-run Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp (JOGMEC) will also provide financial support worth $2 billion in the next five years to help Japanese firms’ natural resource development projects, aiming to catch up with China.

Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), also state-run will secure the maximum of $2 billion trade and investment insurance framework.

Rawlemon’s Spherical Solar Energy-Generating Globes Can Even Harvest Energy from Moonlight

solar energy
The solar energy designers at Rawlemon have created a spherical, sun-tracking glass globe that is able to concentrate sunlight (and moonlight) up to 10,000 times. The company claims that its ß.torics system is 35% more efficient than traditional dual-axis photovoltaic designs, and the fully rotational, weatherproof sphere is even capable of harvesting electricity from moonlight.

The ß.torics system was invented by Barcelona-based German Architect André Broessel. He sought to create a solar system that could be embedded in the walls of buildings so that they may act as both windows and energy generators. But the project isn’t only noteworthy for its solar efficiency capabilities – the ß.torics system is designed to generate lunar energy too!

The spheres are able to concentrate diffused moonlight into a steady source of energy. The futuristic ß.torics system is catching a lot of attention for its clean and beautiful design. (Despite solar power’s huge potential, we haven’t seen too many beautiful solar power technologies). We’re excited to see how architects will incorporate these energy generating orbs into alternative energy agendas and future building designs!

fifa elects woman executive
Burundi FA president Lydia Nsekera has been elected as the first woman to Fifa’s powerful executive committee in the governing body’s 109-year history.
Nsekera, 46, will serve a four-year term on the committee after winning the vote at the Fifa congress in Mauritius.
She collected 95 of the 203 votes ahead of Australian Moya Dodd and Sonia Bien-Aime, of Turks and Caicos Islands.
Nsekera said: “I will inspire women to believe they can lead and I will support women in member associations.”
Nsekera, who last year became the first woman to be co-opted to the executive committee, has been head of the Burundi FA since 2004 and was a member of Fifa’s organising committee for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic football tournaments.

A member of the International Olympic Committee, she is also on the independent governance committee set up in 2011 to tackle corruption within Fifa.
Nsekera told BBC Sport: “I am very happy to be the first woman elected. It is important for Africa, it is important for Burundi, it is important for women.
“In the executive committee, we work as a team, but personally I will carry on working in order to have more women as coaches in grassroots football.
“I will push for more women to be elected and ask parents to let their daughters play football.”
Dodd, who secured 70 votes, and Bien-Aime, who won 38, will both serve a one-year term as co-opted members.
And former Australia international Dodd says the election is a landmark moment for the game.
“It’s a historic day for football and a great day for women,” Dodd said.
“Football is the sport everybody loves; no-one should be excluded. And we should not only protect the game, but also fight against discrimination outside of football.”
