Ethiopians Caught up in South Sudan Crossfire

b331d299Violence that flared up in the South Sudanese capital, Juba, last week, has led to thousands of people seeking refuge in UN bases throughout the country. A number of Ethiopian Citizens are amongst the crowds trying to flee or find a safe haven, with one young Ethiopian lady having been killed in the crossfire.

The violence, which is being called a “Failed coup attempt” and masterminded by the ousted Vice President, Reik Machar by the ruling government, has been bubbling under the surface ever since south Sudan president Salva Kiir removed 29 Ministers and their deputies from their positions back in July. Efforts are now underway to prevent a full scale civil war.

“Unfortunately, just this very morning such militia groups have targeted and killed three soldiers from India in South Sudan,” India’s U.N. Ambassador Asoke Mukerji told a U.N. meeting on peacekeeping Thursday evening.
