Ethiopian Airlines CFO Kassim Geresu appointed as CEO of Malawian Airlines

kassimEthiopian Airlines Chief Financial officer Kassim Geresu, has been appointed to lead Malawian Airlines, the newly reorganized airline of Malawi, which Ethiopian airlines has a 49% stake. Ethiopian Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Tewolde GebreMariam, said in a statement on Tuesday that Kassim Geresu has been seconded from Addis Ababa to head Malawian Airlines as per the management agreement between Ethiopian and Malawian Airlines.

“I am confident that he has the requisite academic background and experience in the airline industry to ensure the successful take-off of Malawian Airlines,” said GebreMariam.

He said the company expects Geresu to make Malawian Airlines a liner of choice for its customers, investors, employees and the general public.

Before his Malawi appointment, Geresu served as chief financial officer of Ethiopian Airlines since October 2010.

He has over 25 years experience in the airline industry after joining Ethiopian in 1988 and holds an MBA from the Open University of the United Kingdom and a Bachelors Degree in Accounting.

Malawian Airlines was established through a strategic partnership between the Malawi government and Ethiopian Airlines as the new national carrier of Malawi.

As per the agreement between the two partners, 51 percent of the shares of Malawian Airlines are held by the Malawian government with Ethiopian having 49 percent as well as the management and technical contract of the newly formed airline.

According to Ethiopian Airlines, the Malawi government and Ethiopian Airlines are currently undertaking all the necessary groundwork and preparations for the start of services of the new airline in less than three months.
