In possibly the most open Melbourne Cup ever, it is easy to make a case for virtually every runner in the field. But one punters seem happy to ignore is the Pat Carey-trained Ethiopia.
At first glance, it is easy to see why. He has won just one race and finished an embarrassing 63 lengths last in the 2012 Melbourne Cup. But Carey is adamant his stayer deserves his place in the illustrious field, and says his run at Flemington on Saturday proved he was ready for the big one.
”Forget last year he got beaten 63 lengths because he got hurt and the best thing to do was pull him out of the race,” Carey said.
He said he would not waste his time this year if Ethiopia was not at his best. But a closing fourth place in the Lexus behind Ruscello confirmed to Carey that all was well.
