Ethio-Mihdar journalists injured after traffic accident

Three journalists from the newly established weekly newspaper Ethio-Mihdar were injured after an accident involving a three-wheeled motor vehicle (Bajaj) and a motor cycle on Wednesday, October 30, in Hawassa, the capital of Southern Nations and Nationalities Peoples’ Regional State (SNNPR).

Getachew Worku, editor-in-chief, Ephrem Beyene, editor, and Million Degnew, general manager, were in SNNPR to cover the corruption case at Hawassa University, Getachew told The Reporter.

“Though the correction was made in relation to that particular news, the University sued and we went to Hawassa in order to defend our company and ourselves,” he said.

The University sued both the general manager, the editor-in-chief and the company, claiming 300,000 birr in damages.

Getachew also told The Reporter that though the court has no local jurisdiction over the case, they summoned the journalists to Hawassa.

After getting first aid treatment at Adare Hospital they were transferred to Hawassa Referral Hospital for further treatment, but Ephrem suffered complications and was transferred to the Korea Hospital in Addis Ababa where he underwent surgery on his spinal cord.

“The injury on Ephrem is complicated and hard,” Getachew told The Reporter.

Ephrem is one of the founders and used to work as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper.
