Ethanol Blending Saved $7.6 million in Foreign Currency

bd6bc677The Ethiopian Ministry of Mines and Energy said, over 8.6 million liters of ethanol has been blended with gasoline and supplied to local market over the concluded Ethiopian Fiscal Year.

Public relation and communication Director with the Ministry, Bizuneh Tolcha told Ethiopian News Agency that supply of increasing amount of ethanol blended gasoline has enabled the country to save US$7.6 million.

The Ethiopian government has set target to blend 64.4 million liters ethanol with gasoline and boost the ethanol content to 25 percent from the current 10 percent, at the end of the five year Growth and Transformation Plan.

Ethiopia started blending gasoline with ethanol in 2009. The country has so far supplied 39.2 million liters ethanol blended gasoline to the local market, saving US$30.9 million in hard currency.

Currently, Nile, Oil Libya and National Oil Company PLC. (NOC) are blending gasoline with ethanol produced by the two state-owned sugar factories, Metehara and Fincha.
