More than 823,000 fuel-efficient biomass stoves have been distributed among the public in Ethiopia during the last nine months, says Water and Energy Ministry Public Relation and Communication Director Bizuneh Tolcha.

Bizuneh told the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) over the weekend that use of such stoves had helped to protect forests on nearly 3,176 hectares of land and prevented the emission of some 220,000 tonnes of carbon.

Bizuneh said the stoves enabled its users to reduce fuel consumption and time and helped to prevent various diseases caused by smoke inhalation.

More than 3.3 million stoves have been distributed among the public during the first half of the Growth and Transformation Plan period from 2010-2011 to 2014-2015.

The Ministry will distribute more than 9.4 million stoves until the end of the plan period.
