UAE, Ethiopia to boost ties

cec0c66fSultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy, will hold a series of meetings with senior Ethiopian government officials in Addis Ababa, to discuss ways to strengthen economic cooperation and investment exchanges trade between the two countries.

In an interview with Emirates News Agency, Wam, Al Mansouri, said that he will brief the Ethiopian officials on the new investment and commercial facilities available in the UAE.

He explained that the visit comes within the framework of the UAE’s keenness to develop relations with the African continent in general and bilateral relations with Ethiopia in particular, and “boost its presence in this great African country.”

After a visit to Julphar Ethiopia plant, Al Mansouri expressed his pleasure that UAE companies have become globally recognised by opening new markets, especially in emerging countries with promising markets, particularly Ethiopia, which, with a population of more than 90 million people, is a huge marketplace for UAE products and brands and a gateway to enter neighbouring markets.

Al Mansouri commended the role of the office of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in opening areas of joint trade cooperation between the UAE and Ethiopian investors, and looking for new promising opportunities between both countries.

The Minister and his accompanying delegation, which includes a number of senior state officials, toured the headquarters of the chamber representative office in Addis Ababa, accompanied by its Head, Tekleab K. Aregawi, and was briefed on the activities of Chamber in Ethiopia. Saud Ali Al Nuaimi, director of Business Affairs, Julphar, said that the pharmaceutical firm has received all support from the Ethio pian government as it allocated land for the establishment of its plant and provided all possible facilities for its success considering it one of the most strategic long-term projects thanks to its contribution to bridging the gap between demand and supply of medicines needed by the people of Ethiopia.

He noted that the Ethiopian government’s pharmaceutical orders amounted to about 11 million dollars since it opened during the past year. He further explained that the production capacity of Julphar in Ethiopia amounting to 15 million syrup bottles, 500 million tablets and 200 million capsules annually.

He revealed that the plant has a plan to produce 50 million injection and sterilised drugs by the end of next year.

Hassen Al Hashemi, vice-president International Relations, Dubai Chamber, said that the Office of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in Ethiopia, which was opened in May last year, was a response to the request of its members who want to look for more investment opportunities to expand their activities and explore new and promising markets especially those close to the UAE as the Ethiopian market.

He noted that the DCCI, which was founded in 1965 and is considered to be the largest in the Middle East in terms of the number of its members, opened its first office outside the country in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan in 2012.
