D.C. police are searching for a thief who swiped a pair of ivory elephant tusks from the District’s city hall.
The tusks were presented to the city as a gift from EthiopianEmperor Haile Selassie I during his first trip to the United States in 1954.
In a statement issued Wednesday, police said the tusks were stolen sometime between Aug. 12-27. A police spokesman could not clarify why the announcement was issued five months after the thefts. He also could not clarify where in the building the artifacts were kept.
According to reports documenting the emperor’s two-month trip to the United States, Selassie gave sets of elephant tusks to several leaders as he traveled across the country with representatives from New York and San Francisco also receiving a pair.
