ad1e62d8D.C. police are searching for a thief who swiped a pair of ivory elephant tusks from the District’s city hall.

The tusks were presented to the city as a gift from EthiopianEmperor Haile Selassie I during his first trip to the United States in 1954.

In a statement issued Wednesday, police said the tusks were stolen sometime between Aug. 12-27. A police spokesman could not clarify why the announcement was issued five months after the thefts. He also could not clarify where in the building the artifacts were kept.
